A fragment of one of the capitals of the south facade of the Royal Palace of Caserta came loose following a violent storm that hit the Campania city on Tuesday. Moreover, the south facade had been restored in 2016.
What caused the detachment was allegedly heavy rain that, combined with hail and lightning, got the better of an acanthus leaf decorating the capital, placed at the top of one of the corner pilasters of the facade’s southwestern forepart, the one facing Charles III Square. The area has been cordoned off and technicians are already at work to prevent further damage.
