In protest against the street art market, American artist Ron English bought a Banksy work for $730,000 and vowed to completely whitewash it: it is the"Slave Labour" mural depicting a child kneeling at a sewing machine with U.K. flags applied. The work had been created by the mysterious street artist in 2012 on the wall of a London bargain store, but after a few months it had been removed, along with the portion of the wall on which it was painted.
The work was sold in Los Angeles by Julien’s Auctions.
English said he will whitewash the work and hang it on the walls of his home. He says he is tired of people stealing art on the streets and reselling it, so he has decided to buy everything he can get his hands on and then paint it. He is also considering the idea of selling the whitewashed “Slave Labor” for $1 million. “I’m crazy, but not stupid,” he added.
