On the night of July 25-26, vandals damaged the mural dedicated to Anna Magnani in Rome ’s Tiburtino III neighborhood. The urban artwork had been created in May 2021 by Lucamaleonte and had been promoted by the Lazio Region in collaboration with AS Roma’s Fondazione Roma Cares on the occasion of initiatives to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Roma Capitale. The mural is also part of a larger project that between 2020 and 2022 saw murals dedicated to iconic figures of Rome, from Gigi Proietti to Alberto Sordi to Sergio Leone.
The work depicts three faces of the famous actress and now has a partial burn at the bottom.
“I express strong outrage at this cowardly and deplorable gesture, which not only strikes a symbol of Roman and national culture, but also damages the Tiburtino III neighborhood and its residents. In the coming days we will intervene together with Ater to restore the mural dedicated to Anna Magnani,” said Lazio Region Councillor for Urban Planning and Housing Policies Massimiliano Valeriani.
“To have vandalized the mural dedicated to Anna Magnani at Tiburtino III is a reckless act that, in addition to qualifying the perpetrators, damages that neighborhood and its inhabitants. I thank as of now, for what they will do, the Ater of Rome and the Lazio Region, which, through the mouth of Councillor Valeriani, has already announced that the mural by the artist Lucamaleonte will be restored in the coming days,” added the Councillor for Culture of Roma Capitale, Miguel Gotor.
