In Rome , worksite operations began the day before yesterday to launch a major extraordinary maintenance operation at the Trevi Fountain, overseen by the Capitoline Superintendency and promoted by theCultural Department of Roma Capitale. The intervention, in the lower part of the fountain, is necessary because of the degradation that is affecting the famous monument, located in an area of high pedestrian traffic and subject to particular microclimatic conditions. These factors favor the formation of biological patina, weed vegetation and limestone deposits, especially in areas exposed to continuous contact with water.
The maintenance of the Trevi Fountain is part of a larger program of interventions planned by the PNRR - Caput Mundi, which also covers other historical monuments such as the fountains of the Quirinale, Barcaccia, Tartarughe and Tiare. The total value of the project is 1.187 million euros.
Despite the work, the monument will remain visible thanks to the installation of minimal visual impact and transparent fencing, plus there will be the introduction, within a month, of a walkway that will allow visitors to walk over the water of the fountain and observe the monument from an unprecedented close-up perspective. This new mode of visitation will be available only to limited groups, and will be useful, the City of Rome points out, in collecting data on attendance, which is crucial in addressing overcrowding problems.
The work will focus mainly on the stone surfaces of the lower part of the monument, with particular attention to the area between the edge of the pool and the access steps, which will undergo a thorough cleaning. Grout joints in various parts of the fountain will also be repaired to ensure its structural and aesthetic preservation. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“Today,” Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said at a press conference, “they are announcing a series of interventions that affect one of the most important and beloved monuments. It begins the extraordinary maintenance, planned and covered by Pnrr caput mundi. It is not a restoration but a short intervention that will be finished by the Jubilee. It will be an opportunity to test the new contingent mode of use. A limited number of people will be able to go on the walkway, and when they leave the other side, the next visitors will enter. This phase will allow us to study flows and timing.”
“We are aware that this is an intervention that touches one of the most iconic monuments in the world, but the fountain will still remain visible,” said Culture Councilor Miguel Gotor.
Claudio Parisi Presicce, Capitoline Superintendent, explained, “The work will affect the lower part of the fountain. It is a complex intervention for the instrumentation to be used but also for the multitude of materials present: marble, stucco, limestone, metals. The construction site will not impede the enjoyment of the monumet that will remain visible thanks to transparent fencing and will be safe for workers and visitors.”
“This is an important and valuable intervention,” said Alessandro Onorato, councillor for Major Events, Sports, Tourism and Fashion. “It will be an opportunity to experiment and analyze a new management of tourist and non-tourist flows,” he concluded."
