Rome, Trastevere's porchetta vandalized. Covered with red paint

The animal rights group Animal Liberation Front covered the disputed Trastevere piglet with red paint to protest the sculpture.

In Rome, the travertine porchetta statue installed a few days ago in Piazza della Malva, in the heart of Trastevere, was vandalized by animal activists. The perpetrators also left their signature on the base of the sculpture: they are Animal Liberation Front, an animal rights collective. They poured a bucket of red paint on the work, covering the animal’s back and snout. The action took place tonight.

The work, called Dal panino si va in piazza, created by sculptor Amedeo Longo, was criticized by virtually everyone, not only by animal lovers who stigmatize the idea of erecting a monument to a dead pig, but also by “carnivores” to whom it simply seemed inappropriate to install such a work in the square. The sculpture, by the way, had already been covered with graffiti (even a blasphemy) in recent days: in short, the operation that was supposed to be part of an “urban regeneration” project promoted by Rome’s Municipality I did not exactly go according to expectations.
