After fourteen years, the Mausoleum of Augustus will be open to the public again: fromMarch 1, 2021, in fact, the largest circular tomb in the ancient world will be accessible again.
The mausoleum has been closed since 2007 to allow first for archaeological investigations aimed at the major recovery project and then for restoration work thanks to Roma Capitale.
After the first phase of conservative restoration, which was completed in 2019 and was carried out thanks to the public financing of 4,275,000 euros (of which 2 million paid by MiBACT and 2,275,000 by Roma Capitale), the monument’s enhancement and musealization phase, financed by the TIM Foundation, is currently underway.
The work is being directed by the Capitoline Superintendency of Cultural Heritage and will make possible a complete museum itinerary that will tell visitors about the various historical phases of the Mausoleum, flanked by a barrier-free route accessible to all, in conjunction with the work on the Augustus Emperor Square, which began in May 2020.
As early as Dec. 21, 2020, it will be possible to book in advance a visit to theimpressive architectural work of Romanity. Tours will last about 50 minutes and will be held Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (with last entry at 3 p.m.). In addition, from March 1 to April 21, 2021, they will be free for everyone with mandatory reservations at mausoleodiaugusto.it. For Rome residents, access will be free from April 22, 2021 until the end of the year.
Starting April 21, 2021, the visit to the Mausoleum will be enriched with digital content, thanks to virtual and augmented reality, in collaboration with the TIM Foundation.
Even with the construction site underway, the public will be able to visit the central area and access the spaces safely. It has been possible to bring forward access to the monument to March 2021 because the setting up of the museum itinerary has already been started and the restoration work carried out so far has already fixed many internal concamations.
During the presentation, Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi said, “We are returning a priceless monument to the city. As a Christmas gift to the Romans, throughout 2021 admission to the Mausoleum will be free.”
