The mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, last night wrote a fiery tweet against a vandal entered the Fountain of Frogs with a scooter. The uncivilized man got caught on camera during his stunt, which sees him stationed in the fountain’s basin with his vehicle raising splashes of water, prompting hilarity from the impromptu cameraman. “In Rome’s historic Coppedè neighborhood, a boy moped into the Fountain of Frogs, which we had recently restored and restored to its splendor. Images are circulating on the net in a shameful video,” Raggi tweeted. “A slap in the face to all of Rome, an offense to all of us citizens.”
The problem, however, is that it is an old video: it had been reposted last night on Instagram by the satirical page Welcome to Favelas, which is used to post ironic images and videos or of assorted shenanigans. However, as is the typical practice of these pages, it often happens that very old videos are posted: this is the case with the video of the fountain vandal, as was explained this morning by the page’s administrators themselves (who were much criticized, however, for not specifying that the video was not recent: the video, moreover, has been removed from the page), and as many social media users had already noticed between last night and this morning. That the video is not new can also be guessed by looking at the fountain’s basin, which is still full of the limestone encrustations that were removed with the latest restoration, completed in early October.
The Fountain of Frogs is located in the Coppedè neighborhood, in the center of Mincio Square. It is a work by Gino Coppedè (Florence, 1866 - Rome, 1927), dating from the 1920s, envisioned as the completion of the residential neighborhood named after the great architect. It was inaugurated in 1927. The restoration completed last month had become necessary because the monument had been pockmarked by smog produced by pollution from transport vehicles and by limestone incrustations caused by water jets. The work cost 283,000 euros.
Obviously, the age of the video is no excuse for the vandal’s action, nor does it make light of the problem of the degradation in which several areas of the city find themselves and of the low presence of principals complained of by many of those who commented on the short film.
