Alfonsina Russo, Director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park, presented on Sept. 19 the 2018/2019 program for the Park, which, among other things, makes use of a new logo to symbolize its new identity, with colors that recall the different monuments that are part of the Park and which was designed by Studio Leonardo Sonnoli.
As for the program, the Colosseum will once again become an inclusive venue in which to host free meetings, lectures and debates as early as next week, and will become the symbol of a new and closer connection with the city. The archaeological site, a whopping 77 hectares in size, will undergo a transformation from now and in the coming months to make the more than 7 million annual visitors feel welcome and at home, offering more and more amenities (such as signage and cafeteria), alongside new museums, exhibitions, events and appointments that make visiting the site an engaging experience.
The new Colosseum Museum will be opened by the end of the year where today there is a space dedicated to temporary exhibitions, while in 2019 the goal is to open the Museum of the Roman Forum, which will be housed inside the convent attached to the Church of St. Francesca Romana. Also in 2019 there will be two new exhibitions dedicated to Giacomo Boni and Carthage and an exhibition scheduled for November that will tell the story of the Rome of the Severans.
Then new routes designed to excite the visitor (such as the Grand Tour or the itinerary dedicated to Templum pacis, Clivus ad Carinas, Horrea Piperataria), the opening for the first time of the Domus Transitoria, the Mythologica project curated by Maurizio Bettini and “The Park outside the Park” to reach out to suburbs and disadvantaged categories, the augmented reality of the Domus Aurea.
The renovation of the Curia Iulia will be the first step for new agreements with the city administration with “the joint opening and integration of the state and municipal forum area,” as Russo further explains, “but the time is not ripe to allow free access, because the flows have increased.” Precisely because of the massive influx of visitors, security is a must: in the 7 million euro project on the security of goods and people shared with the prefecture, there will be the use of cutting-edge technology with cameras, sensors and facial recognition devices.
"With Acea we will choose an area to experiment with an integrated design with lighting and security,“ adds Russo. ”Together with the Guardia di Finanza we are developing strategies to combat illegality and curb hawkers and illegal guides while with Coopculture we want to set up new anti-bagging booking methods."
