Rome, damaged basement of Garibaldi statue at Janiculum Hill

Rome, the base of the monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi at the Janiculum Hill was damaged during a storm.

In Rome, a thunderstorm brought severe damage to the Garibaldi statue at the Janiculum Hill. Part of the base of the statue crumbled, possibly due to a lightning strike that hit the monument around 5 a.m. yesterday. At least this is the reconstruction of events according to the Sovrintendenza ai Beni archeologici, which was alerted together with the Fire Department by the Roma Capitale Police.

Alessandro Cremona, an official of the Capitoline Sovrntendenza, told La Repubblica that “at the level of impact that of lightning is like an explosion. At 5:20 a.m. from collected testimonies a fumine fell. It hit the monument presumably in the northern area, and penetrated splitting bas-relief depicting a lion, on the western slope. The plinth where the equestrian statue is is cracked in two places, and the stability of the horse is being assessed. There is no damage to the bronze parts.”

The surveillance camera was out at the time, probably again due to the storm, so there are no recordings to give certainty about what happened. No injuries to report.
