The first phase of the major construction site by the Special Superintendent of Rome to secure and restore the Sapienza Palace, home of the Senate of the Republic, the State Archives of Rome and the rectory of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza, has been completed. Thus, the Francesco Borromini corridor was inaugurated on Sept. 24, in the presence of the President of the Senate of the Republic Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati, Special Superintendent of Rome Daniela Porro, Director General of Archives Anna Maria Buzzi, and Rector of the Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza Church Fr Sergio Bonanni.
The construction site is due to the collaboration between the Special Superintendent of Rome, the Senate of the Republic, the General Directorate of Archives, the State Archives of Rome and the Vicariate aimed at returning to all an architectural jewel, among the masterpieces of the Roman Baroque. The path that led to the definition of the consolidation and recovery intervention began in December 2016 and, thanks to the recent interventions that lasted about a year, it was possible to restore the corridor of the north wing of the palace, designed and built by Borromini, whose creation, together with that of the Alexandrian library, determined the conclusion of the building of the Roman university.
On the occasion of the opening to the public for the first time, visitors had the opportunity to learn about the restoration supervised by architect Maria Cristina Lapenna of the Special Superintendence of Rome and rediscover the original architectural lines designed by Borromini.
