On the occasion of the Saint’s Day celebrations, on Sunday, August 28, 2022, the Basilica of St. Augustine in Campo Marzio will extraordinarily open its doors from 9 p.m. to midnight for a series of guided tours organized by the Special Superintendent of Rome.
“The Basilica of St. Augustine is an art history book,” explains Daniela Porro, Special Superintendent of Rome, "with masterpieces by Raphael, Caravaggio, Jacopo and Andrea Sansovino, Lanfranco, Guercino, Bernini and many others. Guided tours of the interior of the church, curated by architect Alessandro Mascherucci and restorer Chiara Scioscia Santoro, will also be an opportunity to admire the completion of the restoration of the nave, another stage in a complex restoration of the Basilica that began eight years ago."
The walls and vault of the nave, the subject of the restoration overseen by the Special Superintendence of Rome that has recently been completed, house the series of frescoes with Stories from the Life of the Virgin and Stories and Figures from the Old Testament, painted between 1858 and 1868 by Pietro Gagliardi. Prominent among the fourteen images of the Marian cycle is the first one on the left, depicting theImmaculate Conception of Mary, among the first images on this theme created after the proclamation of the dogma by Pius IX in 1854. “For years the Superintendence has been working intensively to return the Basilica of St. Augustine to the community of the faithful and visitors, through complex structural consolidation and restoration works, carried out also thanks to the contribution of private sponsors,” so Mascherucci, architect in charge of the monument. “This church is an extraordinary palimpsest of art and history and the guided tours will be a time to share all this with the city, Romans and all visitors.”
Tours will be every half hour with a maximum of 20 visitors, with last entry at 11:30 pm.
