Rome, 40 thousand applications for 77 janitor positions in museums and libraries

Monstrous figures for the competition Zetema has announced to find 77 janitors to work in Rome's museums and libraries: nearly 40,000 applications came in. On average, an applicant has a 1 in 500 chance of being hired.

Monstrous figures for the competition announced by Zètema Progetto Cultura s.r.l, the Roma Capitale subsidiary that manages the city’s cultural sites, for 77 positions of museum room assistant and public assistance, reference and front office support worker for libraries: 67 units in the first profile, 10 in the second, to do in the first case supervisory activities and in the second to support the main library activities aimed at the public, e.g., enrollment and user management, document circulation support, lending and return, bibliographic information activities.

In fact, nearly 40,000 applications came in: 21,192 to be a janitor in museums and 18,196 to be an assistant in libraries. Applicants for the position of janitor have a one in 316 chance of winning the competition, while their colleagues have as many as one in 1819. Proportionally, it was easier to win the Ministry of Culture’s big competition for Usage, Reception and Supervision Assistants, which received more than two hundred thousand applications for 1,052 positions, with a one in 200 chance of winning.

Evidently, the stakes are considered attractive: museum custodians will have part-time contracts parameterized on a gross salary of 1495.20 euros per month (there will be 57 30-hour contracts, and 10 24-hour contracts), while for assistants salaries of 1697.55 euros gross per month to be repartitioned over ten part-time contracts of 30 hours each. Both positions are open-ended, and a high school diploma was sufficient for both profiles, a circumstance that evidently boosted the number of applicants. And it certainly also affected the fact that similar positions had not been put up for competition for eight years. In short, all that remains for the thousands of applicants is to wish each other good luck; it will be necessary to pass a selection process that involves first an analysis of resumes, then a remote written test, and finally an oral.

Zetema has already let it be known that “given the large number of applications submitted, it will not be possible at this time to provide estimates of the time required to carry out the stages of the procedure.” The hope of the applicants is that the process will not take as long as the Ministry’s, which took nearly three years to complete.
