Roberto Bolle, the étoile of the Teatro alla Scala, may be leaving the stage in two years: he announced this in an interview with Sky TG24 deputy director Omar Schillaci, on the occasion of the series of interviews titled Stories that the Sky channel is dedicating to the world of entertainment.
“Dancers retire at 47. I am 45, so I am about to retire; I will retire in April 2022,” he said. “In my opinion it’s a good compromise: it’s strange to say that at 47 someone retires, as a human age you are young, but as a tersic age you are actually not so young anymore. We start dancing professionally when we are 19 years old and enter the company. We start school when we are 11 years old, now I have been doing this for 30 years and pushing my physique to the maximum, to very high levels, asking for more every day. But as long as the physique allows me I will go on,” he added.
During the interview, the current issue of the effects the pandemic is causing on the arts and dance was also discussed. He recalled that the world of live performance has been greatly affected, both for those on stage and all those behind the scenes. Thousands of people are in really dramatic situations, so many shows have been canceled for months, and this is not a short-term situation, but a long-term one. “In dance right now, the physical contact part is what’s missing. For everyone, but for a dancer even more so. We are used to having a very important physicality. Having to give up this part, to limit it as much as possible, is necessary but equally difficult,” Bolle stressed.
The interview will air on Monday, Nov. 30 at 9 p.m. on Sky TG24 in the Stories program.
Also just released is the autobiographical book Words That Dance in which the famous dancer tells his story both artistically and humanly.
