On Monday, October 15, 2018, work began on the restoration of the Sacra di San Michele.
The famous Romanesque-Gothic Piedmontese abbey had been hit by fire on the evening of Jan. 24, 2018, destroying part of the roof and severely damaging the vaults of the top floor.
The work is made possible thanks to funding amounting to 1 million euros from MiBAC. “The prompt disbursement of resources confirms the Ministry’s attention to Piedmont’s cultural heritage,” says MiBAC Regional Secretary for Piedmont, Eng. Gennaro Miccio.
The completion of the first batch of works, which will again provide full accessibility to the convent premises, is expected by March 2019. Further work needed to ensure the safety of the abbey by enhancing fire prevention garrisons and equipment will be carried out from the second half of 2019, with completion scheduled for the following year.
According to the superintendent, arch. Luisa Papotti, “the construction site will restore intact the landscape of Mount Pirchiriano and the image of the Sacra; at the same time it will provide an opportunity to address the complex issue of the safety of a monument of great emblematic value.”
