On Tuesday, October 29, 2019, in Paris, the extraordinary restoration of the Chapel of the Shroud, a masterpiece by Guarino Guarini, will be awarded the 2019 European Heritage Prize / Europa Nostra Award in the Conservation category.
The prize is organized by the European Commission and Europa Nostra.
The award ceremony will be held at the Théâtre du Châtele in the presence of European Commissioner Tibor Navracsics: the director of the Royal Museums of Turin, Enrica Pagella, and the director of restoration work, Marina Feroggio, will receive the award.
Commissioned by the Dukes of Savoy and designed by Guarino Guarini between 1668 and 1682, the Chapel of the Shroud is set between the Royal Palace and the Cathedral of Turin and is a monument that has no comparison in European architecture; it is a symbolic place that represented for the faithful the journey from the darkness of sin to eternal salvation. On the night of April 11-12, 1997, the Chapel was damaged by fire, necessitating lengthy and demanding architectural and structural restoration work
The restoration work at the Chapel of the Shroud has been called a winning bet because of the complexity and difficulty of the restoration, which over a period of 20 years saw three different construction sites alternating.
At the awards ceremony, the winner of the Public Choise Award category, in which the Chapel of the Shroud was included, will also be revealed.
