Restoration of Piero della Francesca's Resurrection in Sansepolcro ends. The masterpiece once again on view

Restoration work on the "Resurrection," the great masterpiece by Piero della Francesca (Borgo Sansepolcro, c. 1412 - 1492), probably painted between 1450 and 1465 (although new research may move it to around 1470), has been completed.
In March 2015, Dr. Aldo Osti, a former Buitoni executive, donated €10000 to restore the mural painting (described by English writer Aldous Huxley as "the most beautiful painting in the world) to an optimal state of preservation, and three years later, and more precisely on Saturday, March 24, 2018, the work now housed in the Museo Civico di Sansepolcro in Arezzo can be admired again.
The restorers who put time and energy into the undertaking are Paola Ilaria Mariotti of theOpificio delle Pietre Dure and Umberto Senserini of the Soprintendenza, who will present the painting to the public on the appointed date after the authorities greetings.
A note reads, “The conservation intervention, preceded by important diagnostic investigations carried out with the most advanced technologies, has seen a succession of various phases of cleaning, aimed at the removal of extraneous substances of deposit, and has intervened on phenomena of degradation in place on the paint film, to arrive at restoring to the work all the original chromatic vitality.”
Culture councillor Gabriele Marconcini explained that the date March 24 was chosen so that “The Resurrection” could be visited during Easter week.

“Today we can state with certainty what we had long heard: the painting was moved here from another place, perhaps even from an outside wall on the arengario.” Cecilia Frosinini, director of the Wall Paintings Restoration sector at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, toldANSA. “It is therefore one of the oldest and most monumental solid-stone transports in the history of art. Deciding to bring it here, to the Palace of the Residence and the Hall of the Conservators of the People was an identity choice.” The restoration has also shed light on the technique adopted by the great artist. “Today we also know that the greens are the weakest, as well as the pink of the mantle had to be more loaded,” but having eradicated sulfation, a “disease” of the painted plasters, “we chose to stop in front of the awareness of history, without intervening artificially and letting time speak.” Now, added the director of works for the Superintendency, Paola Refice, “we need to ensure that the Resurrection is routinely maintained. It must never happen again that a work comes to need such major interventions.”
