Record-breaking auction today for Picasso's Portrait of Marie-Thérèse Walter

The Portrait of Marie-Thérèse Walter, a work by Pablo Picasso created in 1937, will be auctioned off today after 7 p.m. at Sotheby ’s for a record sum: it starts at £37 million.

Also known as the Femme au béret et à la robe quadrillée, the work depicts Marie-Thérèse, Picasso’s French muse and lover before Dora Maar.

Today’s auction is the highlight of an event that will see some forty masterpieces by the Spanish artist and others fromImpressionism to the Avant-Garde go up for auction by the middle of next week.

According to critics, the portrait in question is “a perfect combination of radical invention, mastery of color and psychological insight.”

The painting has been exhibited to the public only twice before being taken between Hong Kong and Taiwan in recent weeks to be shown to wealthy possible buyers.
