Rebuilding Notre Dame: a documentary shows the interior of the cathedral before and after the fire

A new virtual reality documentary entitled Rebuilding Notre Dame, created by TARGO and Oculus VR, is available on Oculus TV with Oculus Quest. Through this new virtual reality experience, people around the world will have the opportunity to goinside Notre Dame Cathedral to observe it before and after the fire that engulfed it in flames on the afternoon of April 15, 2019, completely destroying the spire.

The documentary begins with a series of news stories about the fire. “We wanted everyone to remember that feeling of helplessness we felt the moment we saw the Cathedral on fire. The collection of different footage in different languages is a way to reflect the global impact of this event; suddenly the whole world was concerned about the fate of the Cathedral and followed the events live. This had to be our starting point,” said Chloé Rochereuil, Director & Co-Founder of TARGO.

The video was intended to overlap present and past, through the combination of footage taken before the fire and footage showing what the interior of the cathedral looks like today. “This documentary aims to show how the Cathedral will be brought back to life. By highlighting the contrast between the pristine beauty of the Cathedral before the fire and the damage that followed, viewers can realize the hard task that awaits everyone,” added Victor Agulhon, Producer & Co-Founder of TARGO.

Rebuilding Notre Dame also features interviews with the four main protagonists of the cathedral’s past and present: Patrick Chauvet, Rector Archpriest of Notre Dame; General Jean-Louis Georgelin, appointed by President Macron to lead the public body in charge of Notre-Dame’s restoration; Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris; and Jean-Michel Leniaud, historian specializing in art history and President of the "Society of the Friends of Notre-Dame.
