Re-fitting of Palazzo Barberini continues: work begins July 1

As of July 1, 2019, work begins on the continuation of the refurbishment of Palazzo Barberini: the Caravaggio and Caravaggesque rooms will be renovated.

As of July 1, 2019 Palazzo Barberini in Rome, continues the renovation of its exhibition spaces by refitting the rooms dedicated to Caravaggio, the Caravaggesque painters and seventeenth-century painting, adapting them to the recently renovated south wing of the piano nobile.

Therefore, the exhibition rooms between No. 17 and No. 24 will be closed untilNovember: the most significant works preserved in these rooms will be transferred to other rooms of the museum and will be visible to the public. Caravaggio’s Judith and Holofernes is now placed in dialogue with the one painted by Francesco Furini in room 34 of the new south wing; Hans Holbein the Younger ’sHenry VIII has been transferred to a room dedicated to portraiture; masterpieces by Lorenzo Lotto, El Greco and Tintoretto will be in room 14, while paintings from the Caravaggio school can be admired in room 15.

The museum management has under these circumstances co-curated the exhibition Wege des Barock. Die Nationalgalerien Barberini Corsini in Rom, scheduled from July 13 to October 6, 2019 at the Museum Barberini in Potsdam.

The latter was built by architect Carl von Gontard in the second half of the 18th century on the model of the Palazzo Barberini; destroyed during World War II, it was rebuilt between 2013 and 2016. On the occasion of the exhibition, 54 works from the National Galleries’ collection will be on display in Potsdam, from the museum’s refurbished rooms and storage rooms, including some well-known ones, such as Narcissus attributed to Caravaggio, Giovanni Lanfranco’s Transfiguration Giovanni Baglione’sSacred Love and Profane Love, and Orazio Gentileschi’s Saint Francis Supported by the Angel, alongside lesser-known and usually unexhibited works, such as Pietro da Cortona ’s painting The Vault of the Hall of Divine Providence or Salvator Rosa’s allegories of Music and Poetry.

The loaned works will return to Rome in October, and some of them will be installed in the renovated rooms of the palace’s north wing, scheduled to reopen in early December 2019.
