MiBACT gives birth to a new photographic archive: Scenes from Heritage, conceived by theICCD - Central Institute for Catalogue and Documentation in order to bring the Italian public closer to cultural heritage through private and family photography.
With this new portal, the ICCD kicks off a new project focused on photography that complements its institutional mission of preserving and enhancing its photographic collections and managing the General Catalogue of Cultural Heritage. Scenes from a Heritage is intended to be a continuously updated public archive that welcomes personal archives: indeed, it is believed that every memory, every testimony is a piece to recompose the history of the country. Included in everyone’s photographs are public spaces, squares, museums, works of art, moments of social and cultural sharing, such as processions, out-of-town trips, Made in Italy, a monument, a glimpse of a city or landscape.
The institution invites everyone to participate in the collective archive with their own photographic images. The photographic collections divided by themes allow to capture different narratives and representations of Italy’s cultural heritage.
Souvenir, Devotion, A Square to..., The Country in the Ball are the first four collections launched on the portal. Souvenir is dedicated to art cities, museums, monuments with the Bel Paese in the background; Devotion is dedicated to processions, collective rituals; Una piazza a... is dedicated to squares, from the largest to the smallest, monumental squares; The Country in the Ball is dedicated to soccer, teams and playing fields.
Carlo Birrozzi, ICCD director, commented, “I believe in the idea of cultural heritage as a continuous flow to be photographed as it flows; a vital asset, an ever-moving tide that we wish to make accessible to all, welcoming and giving back the point of view of each individual who contributes to it. #scenedapatrimony is one of the strategic levers on which the Institute has been working tirelessly for months to bring the public institution as close as possible to the territory and people, interacting and returning value through the medium of photography. Memories and photographs consolidate and complete the collective vision on Italian cultural heritage in a simple and participatory way.”
To contribute to the collections, one must register on the portal and upload their photographs by following the instructions. With this project, the ICCD aims to give new meaning to private and family photographs and recognize their value as cultural heritage. Photography is heritage that tells the story of heritage. It is key element that takes on the dual value of documentation and heritage.
