The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, remembered the great Raphael Sanzio on the 500th anniversary of his death. Following is the message of the head of state:
"The creative genius, art, and works of Raphael Sanzio are immortal and constitute a heritage of humanity, to which, even at his young age, he succeeded in bestowing beauty and harmony, renewing figurative culture and leaving a trace that has always remained clearly visible over the centuries.
On the 500th anniversary of his death, we pay tribute to a genius of Italian painting, who, together with Leonardo and Michelangelo, became a universal symbol of our Renaissance.
We trust that this anniversary will be an opportunity to study Raphael again, to make his knowledge more widespread, to admire the masterpieces that enrich buildings and museums, to deepen, alongside his extraordinary talent as a painter, his qualities as an architect and a student of antiquities.
The current health emergency forced the closure, a few days after the opening, of the exhibition on Raphael set up at the Scuderie del Quirinale, where masterpieces from collections and museums from all over the world arrived. The hope is that the doors can be reopened as soon as possible and that from that Renaissance spirit that made Raphael’s art incomparable we can draw energy for a restart of Italy and Europe."
