Presented the restoration of Pontormo’s famous Deposition: the work has been cleaned up and regained its original colors thanks to the impeccable work of restorer Daniele Rossi, directed by the superintendence official in charge of the Santo Spirito district Daniele Rapino.
The Friends of Florence, a nonprofit foundation, financed the restoration with a donation of 105,000 euros.
Also restored was the gilded frame that adorns the painting.
In addition to the Deposition, restoration of the Capponi Chapel in Santa Felicita in Florence is still underway.
The painting will return to public view and will be the focus of the exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi,"The Sixteenth Century in Florence," to be held from September 2017 to January 2018, while the Capponi Chapel will be reopened in February 2018 with new lighting.
Friends of Florence president Simonetta Brandolini d’Adda said, “The intervention on the chapel was total and involved all the works inside, from the tombstones to the wooden artifacts, from the decorated wall surfaces to the detached frescoed parts, from the stone works to the plasterwork, up to Pontormo’s painting the Deposition. The latter will be on display at the Palazzo Strozzi exhibition in September: it will be for us the witness and amplifier of our intervention to the entire Cappella Capponi. I would like to thank on behalf of the Foundation all those who are working on the project, and I hope that our participation may have contributed to a deeper understanding of the works in this wonderful chapel.”
“Pontormo’s Deposition of Santa Felicita represents an absolute masterpiece of art history and will be one of the most important loans for the Palazzo Strozzi exhibition ”The Sixteenth Century in Florence.“ The extraordinary contribution of Friends of Florence for its restoration with the fundamental collaboration of the Soprintendenza Belle Arti e Archeologia of Florence, Prato and Pistoia will return this work to its maximum splendor, while also giving visitors to Palazzo Strozzi the opportunity to admire it in an important exhibition context,” said Arturo Galansino, Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi director general.
