Pre-Viking sword dating back to the 5th century found--by a little girl!

In Sweden, a little girl is the author of an important archaeological discovery: a pre-Viking sword dating back to the 5th century.

These days the international media have been reporting on a major archaeological discovery that took place in Sweden earlier this summer, but what is causing a stir is not the length of time from its discovery to its disclosure, but rather who made it and how.

Going into detail, an eight-year-old Swedish girl named Saga Venecek was swimming in the waters of Lake Vidöstern in Småland when she suddenly stepped on something metallic: a pre-Viking sword about 85 cents long dating, according to experts, to the fifth century! “I felt something in the water and lifted it up,” Saga recounted when interviewed by Swedish radio station Sveriges Radio. “When I lifted the object, I saw a handle and told my father that it looked like a sword!”

“It’s not every day you step on a sword in the lake!” commented Mikael Nordström, archaeologist at the Jönköpings Läns Museum, to the online newspaper The Local. “Hard to understand at the moment how it was possible that the sword ended up there, so close to the shore. Or how no one noticed it in 1,500 years,” Nordström added. “A couple of weeks ago we started more research and found another very old object, a brooch from the same period as the sword. From what we know it could be a place intended for a sacrifice, or a tomb. But at the moment we have no other news,” concluded the archaeologist.
