One year after the project was conceived, the first demo version of the game Vesuvius 79 AD was presented by creator Ciro Sapone and Pompeii Archaeological Park director Gabriel Zuchtriegel. - Escape from Pompeii, theedu-boardgame (educational board game), which reconstructs in a scientific and historical manner, the destruction of Pompeii following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Players must escape from the volcano’s eruption in 79 A.D. to safety, abandoning the city before its destruction.
Created by Ciro Sapone, Vesuvius is an innovative educational board game. Thanks to the close collaboration between the Park’s experts, the author and his team, the characters assigned to the players are real citizens who inhabited the city of Pompeii, and whose names, trades and in some cases portraits we know, which then, cartoonists and illustrators have transformed into the game’s protagonists. The project is made by Stupor Mundi Trans-Media, a Neapolitan Cross-Gamification company, and Accademia del Fantastico in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, which provided the scientific, historical and iconographic background to the author, illustrators, game designers, cartoonists, modelers and programmers. The first demo version of the game was presented with illustrations of the main characters, game mechanics and the related APP, which will go on sale at Christmas.
The game will be produced in nine languages, will have Italian and international distribution, and will be on sale at bookstores, comic book stores, game-gadget and toy stores, and large online distribution at the manufacturer’s e-commerce and major international platforms.
To offer the possibility for the public to expand the boardgame, a number of paper model kits, PaperCrafts, have also been produced, which accompanied by a set of plastic miniatures to be colored by hand, will allow players to reconstruct the main villas and most characteristic places of ancient Pompeii, including the inhabitants. The miniatures are scaled with papercraft kits (scale: 1.72), and are made by sculpting and 3D printing.
The entire realization process by the Academy of the Fantastic takes place under the supervision of the staff of archaeologists of the Pompeii Archaeological Park.
“Also this year the Archaeological Park of Pompeii is enthusiastically participating in Comicon, presenting this board game for which we provided scientific advice and total support. We believe that the game mode is fundamental for learning about, exploring, and appreciating culture in all its forms,” said Park Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel. “This edu-boardgame is precisely an innovative tool that in a simple way, through a strong playful component, brings new generations closer to cultural heritage.”
