Pisa is a candidate for Italian Capital of Culture 2022 and has officially submitted its candidacy dossier to MiBACT.
The Balance of Contradictions is the title chosen for the dossier that encapsulates the guidelines of the program of cultural activities planned for this occasion.
The candidacy had been launched last December, and as of January 2020, the promoting committee had been formed; the rich program of cultural events was joined by the city’s leading cultural institutions.
The dossier, divided into three parts, also discusses the eco-sustainability of actions and economic-financial sustainability.
“Pisa is running for Italian Capital of Culture in order to reflect on some contradictions that are emerging more and more vividly in the urban expression of our city,” the dossier reads. “The candidacy, however, represents not only an internal confrontation, but also a stimulus for other Italian realities that recognize themselves in the same themes and that with us will want to collaborate for a new overall design of urban sustainability. 2022 becomes, therefore, for Pisa a year in which its different souls (citizens, universities, students, cultural operators, associations, businesses) reflect, experiment and consolidate shared thoughts and practices to understand how culture can guide the re-design of the city, the quality of its individual and collective living, the relational potential of new technologies, facing with awareness the contradictions of contemporaneity, not least the fragility of our living in the face of abrupt changes, unexpected and unpredictable situations.”
