A fine painting by Pietro da Cortona kept at the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia has been restored: it is the Madonna and Child with Saint Martina painted by the artist between 1645 and 1648.
Restoration work has brought to light the brilliance of the colors, particularly of the saint’s robe and the pearls in her hair.
Pietro da Cortona wanted to depict of the saint both her nobility and her martyrdom: the former is emphasized by the elegance of her robe, gestures and beautiful hairstyle adorned with pearls, the latter is represented by the palm and hooks that the saint has beside her.
The restoration was carried out by theIstituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro.
