A large work of street art in “plaster on concrete” has been created in Pesaro’s Piazzale della Libertà by local street artist Rossella De Stefani (aka Ross Deste). To admire it well in its entirety and from the right perspective, however, requires a view ... from above.
It is a giant twenty-one-meter-diameter tondo that reproduces the famous Madonna della Seggiola, a masterpiece by Raphael created between 1513 and 1514 now preserved at the Galleria Palatina in Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
The artist chose to pay homage to the great Urbino painter with his huge work in the year of the celebration of the five hundredth anniversary of his death.
“I put my soul into this work,” commented the street artist. “I love my city and to be able to create something so impressive, in a striking location and on land that lends itself greatly, made me proud. It is the biggest job I have ever done. To do it I had to do technical preparation, dividing the space into spokes with rope and plaster; but also physical preparation, because composing for over four hours a day in these temperatures is not easy.” Ross Deste in fact took sixteen days to make the large Raphaelesque tondo.
Pesaro Mayor Matteo Ricci added, “This is the square of music, of dancing, of tourism, but this year it takes on a different meaning. Unfortunately, many initiatives could not be organized because of the emergency related to Covid-19, but it was a shame not to make it come alive. This idea is really exceptional, because it allows us to make this place even more beautiful. Thanks to Scarlett, for her work, physical effort and immense artistic ability. Important because this is the year of Raphael, for the whole area many initiatives have been canceled, but this reminder of the painter allows us to have him remembered throughout the region.”
