As part of Pesaro Italian Capital of Culture 2024, the restoration of the Loggia del Genga in the Palazzo Ducale in Pesaro began yesterday, initiated by theAgenzia del Demanio and approved by the Soprintendenza Archeologica Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Ancona and Pesaro and Urbino. The intervention includes the redoing of plasters and the installation of moisture control devices. The restoration work will cost 464,000 euros and is part of a broader framework of interventions that the Agency is conducting as Contracting Station in the historic part of the Ducal Palace of Pesaro, current seat of the Prefecture, which also include energy and seismic efficiency upgrading of the noble halls and the maintenance restoration of the Secret Garden. The agency awarded the work to Impresa C.O.I.D. S.r.l. of Rome, following a public bidding process held in recent weeks.
The Loggia del Genga was built by Francesco Maria I della Rovere, who had it built around 1530 to a design by architect Gerolamo Genga. Originally, the only access to the Loggia was the spiral staircase connected to theDuchess’s apartment: the Loggia and the overlooking Secret Garden were in fact spaces designed and conceived for the exclusive use of the Duchess and her ladies of the court.
Now the restoration will allow the expansion of public access to the entire monumental compendium, in agreement with the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche and the Prefecture itself. In a few months the Loggia will thus be returned to the city of Pesaro and its inhabitants.
