Perugia, Sciri Tower restored with European funds reopens

The Sciri Tower, Perugia's only intact tower, is the focus of a campaign of guided tours and events to enhance European-funded projects

Restored and redeveloped the Sciri Tower in Perugia and the surrounding area: 46 meters high, it is the only tower to remain intact among the many towers that dot the city. In fact, Perugia was known by the title “turrita.”

The Sciri Tower is made of small blocks of white limestone, and on the lintel of the door, at the base of the tower, one can see a heraldic shield depicting the Sciri symbol, namely the rooster’s leg. The Sciri family, among the noble lineages, owned the tower from the end of the 16th century.

Restoration of the tower had begun in 2011 and was completed in 2015, and at the same time the nearby former Sciri Convent owned by theUmbria Region’s Territorial Housing Authority (ATER) was rehabilitated for the construction of twelve accommodations for rent at agreed rents. Funding to support the renovation comes from the European Regional Development Fund, granted by the Region of Umbria, and funds from the Municipality of Perugia.

The redevelopment of the surrounding area in order to give it new life was necessary following the depopulation and subsequent cessation of many businesses located in the Sciri Tower area. Through the Complex Urban Program (PUC2) of the Municipality of Perugia, the entire urban system of the center has been revalued, becoming once again one of the most vital areas of the city. The redevelopment of the Sciri Tower and theentire area of Via dei Priori has initiated a process of both economic and social rebirth by attracting new flows of tourists and generating a new residential offer, thanks to the recovery of housing for couples. The development of the project allowed for the enhancement of the Tower, the redevelopment of the underlying Via dei Priori, as well as the recovery of the former Convent of the Sciri, within which housing was built.

The project for the recovery and redevelopment of the Sciri Tower and the surrounding area had a total cost of about 563,000 euros.

Until August 30, a campaign of guided tours and events promoted by the Region of Umbria together with the Municipality of Perugia, which is part of the #EUinmyRegion projects, made the Tower accessible to enhance local projects supported and financed thanks to European funds.
