Parma will be the Italian Capital of Culture 2020. The winner was announced a few minutes ago by the president of the selection jury, Stefano Baia Curioni, during the conference convened at the Spadolini Room of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage in the Collegio Romano building.
Parma prevailed over nine other finalists: Agrigento, Bitonto, Casale Monferrato, Macerata, Merano, Nuoro, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and Treviso. The Emilian city will therefore host, throughout 2020, cultural events, exhibitions, and relevant activities to “make the value of cultural leverage for social cohesion, integration, creativity, innovation, economic development, and individual and collective well-being more widely understood.” Parma thus follows Ravenna, Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia and Siena (the five 2015 capitals), Mantua (2016), Pistoia (2017) and Palermo (2018), while no Italian capital is planned for 2019 since Italy will have Matera as European Capital of Culture.
During the conference, Stefano Baia Curioni thanked the mayors and promotion committees of the candidate cities, as well as the members of the commission that chose the Italian capital.
