During the closing ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the traditional handover between the organizers of the just-concluded Olympic Games and those who will instead have to deal with the next edition took place. The 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris, and it was during the closing of the Tokyo 2020 games that the first Paris 2024 promotional video was unveiled. It is Ride, a short film signed by young director Valentin Petit (born in 1990) and set to music by composer Woodkid (stage name of Yoann Lemoine, another young man born in 1983), which welcomes the world with a BMX ride (which has been an Olympic sport since Beijing 2008) through the main monuments of France’s capital city.
The idea of the video is to “let the world discover a project open to all, which abolishes borders between spectators and athletes, in a magnificent setting that asks nothing more than to be in the spotlight.” The one-minute video opens with a bird’s-eye view of the rooftops of Paris, heralded by the presence of a red-haired girl emerging from a window. Then begins the BMX ride through the monuments of Paris, with special emphasis on the museums: the Musée d’Orsay, the Grand Palais (under whose glass roof is a Paralympic fencing match), the Palais Garnier, the Palais Royal, and the Louvre are particularly recognizable. And then again here appear some of the symbols of Paris, such as the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, the Panthéon, Place de la Concorde, and not even the Stade de France, the sports temple of the French capital.
The film closes with a view of Paris over which the Eiffel Tower towers: a huge Guinness World Record flag with the Olympics logo flies from the city’s most symbolic monument. A flag that will actually be installed on the Eiffel Tower: tests were done in June with another huge flag that was hung on the monument, raising many questions. It is now clear what the purpose of the tests was! To see the video, which was put online a few minutes ago, you can go to YouTube.
