Painting by Pietro Novelli damaged and awaiting restoration. Lying on the ground since last summer.

A painting by Pietro Novelli in the Abbey Basilica of San Martino delle Scale in Monreale has been damaged: on the ground since last summer awaiting restoration.

Damaged by afall is a painting by Pietro Novelli (Monreale, 1603 - Palermo, 1647), a leading artist of the 17th century in Sicily. The work depicts St. Benedict distributing the Rule to the monastic and chivalric orders, an oil on canvas dated 1635. The incident occurred last summer, in the Abbey Basilica of San Martino delle Scale in Monreale; since then the painting has a gash in the lower left side and, awaiting restoration, is still lying on the floor, on the transept, held with restraints.

“In the past few months it fell accidentally and fortunately, no one was below it. It was placed there as a reminder of the restoration,” it was stated by the Abbey.

But due to lack of resources it still lies abandoned.
