The famous equestrian statue of Gattamelata, a masterpiece by Donatello that stands in front ofSt. Anthony’s Basilica in Padua, will leave its seat after more than five and a half centuries to be transferred to the Basilica Museum; a copy will be placed in its place. This was announced by the Pontifical Delegate to the Saint, Monsignor Fabio Dal Cin.
The original will be restored, as it has been damaged by weathering and pigeons, and the entire operation, including the transfer, will cost about two million euros.
“The Pontifical Delegation for the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua,” Dal Cin said, "has among its main tasks the protection of the immeasurable artistic and cultural heritage of the Antonian complex. And in this sense, long ago, it decided to musealize the Gattamelata monument, placing in its place a perfect copy. “The musealization,” he added, “will have the dual advantage of permanently saving the work, otherwise doomed to inevitable deterioration, and making it even more appreciable by citizens and visitors thanks to specially created enhancement paths,” Dal Cin said.
