Outstanding discovery by an Italian researcher: found Galileo's letter against the Church's theories on the universe

A researcher at the University of Bergamo has discovered in the Royal Society of London the original manuscript by Galileo Galilei where he denies the Church's theories about the universe

The Royal Society of London, a prestigious library and scientific academy, was home to theoriginal manuscript of Galileo Galilei, containing his theses on the universe that led to his being accused of heresy.

Until now, the letter in question had always been thought to be lost: it was found by a researcher at the University of Bergamo, Salvatore Ricciardo.

It is a seven-page long manuscript dating from 1613, signed at the bottom G.G. and addressed to Benedetto Castelli, a mathematician and physicist, in which Galilei denies for the first time the Church’s doctrine that the Sun revolves around the Earth.
The letter has numerous corrections and changes, probably made to avoid the consequences of theInquisition.

The text was sent in 1615 to the Inquisition by Niccolo Lorini, a Dominican friar, and the copy of the letter is now kept in the Vatican Secret Archives.

Announcing the exceptional find was the scientific journal Nature.
