Green Book, a story of friendship in racist 1960s America, won Best Picture at the 2019 edition of the Oscars. The 91st Academy Awards ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles (for the first time in 30 years without an official presenter) saw Green Book triumph, in addition to Green Book, which won three awards (in addition to Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor with Mahershala Ali and Best Original Screenplay, which went to Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, and Peter Farrelly), two other eve favorites: Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic about the early years of Queen (who, by the way, performed at the opening of the ceremony) from the group’s founding to 1985’s Live Aid, and Roma, the story of a Mexican family in the 1970s told from the point of view of the house maid.
Bohemian Rhapsody was the most awarded film: it won best lead actor, which goes to Rami Malek for his masterful portrayal of Freddie Mercury (thus defeated Willem Dafoe for his van Gogh in On the Threshold of Eternity), best editing (John Ottman), best sound (Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali) and best sound editing (John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone). Instead, Roma won three of the major awards: best foreign film, best director and best cinematography (the latter both going to director Alfonso Cuarón.
Glenn Close failed to win best lead actress for her performance in The Wife: the actress, in her seventh nomination, has yet to win the statuette. The award went to Olivia Colman for The Favourite. Best Supporting Actress was won by Regina King for If The Road Could Talk, while Best Song is Shallow by Lady Gaga(A Star is Born). Among the winners there is also a bit of Italy: the Oscar for best animated film in fact went to Spider-Man, a new universe, which features among the team of cartoonists the young Marche-based comic artist Sara Pichelli, born in Porto Sant’Elpidio in 1983.
