Restoration work on the piano nobile of Rome’s Palazzo Venezia is getting underway as part of work on the Metro Line C. The restoration work focuses in a first phase on theAppartamento Barbo, the seven private rooms of Venetian Cardinal Pietro Barbo, who later became Pope Paul II. Subsequent operations will cover the Monumental Rooms and theAppartamento Cibo, the cardinal’s residence along the ancient Via Papale, today’s Via del Plebiscito.
The project was initiated after a cognitive survey campaign to verify the state of the decorative apparatus (ceilings, floors and paintings) of the second floor facing Piazza Venezia and Via del Plebiscito.
During the works, the VIVE - Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia will guarantee access to the public, transforming the restoration into an “open” construction site, with the possibility of observing the workers live by taking part in guided tours that will be organized ad hoc throughout the period of the works, which will end at the end of 2025.
Kicking off the works are VIVE - Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia, headed by Edith Gabrielli, the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Government architect Maria Lucia Conti, Roma Metropolitane Srl with Rup Ing. Andrea Sciotti and Metro C S.C.p.A with CEO Ing. Fabrizio Paolo Di Paola.
The work is part of the larger project of the new stable visit route, dedicated to the theme of “Made in Italy.” Curated for the museological part by Edith Gabrielli and the museographic by renowned architect Michele De Lucchi, the project involves the entire main floor of the palace, including precisely the rooms between Piazza Venezia and Via del Plebiscito, which are now empty. The public will once again be able to admire hundreds of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, weapons, furniture, jewelry, textiles and other examples of the applied, or decorative arts, most of which, to date, have been confined to storage.
Outside the palace, scaffolding will be set up to tell the story of the building’s interior, thus maintaining a dialogue with the city and its visitors.
“Today at Palazzo Venezia a massive construction site kicks off that will involve the main floor of the Palazzo itself,” said Edith Gabrielli, director of VIVE - Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia. “Thanks to the collaboration and sensitivity of all parties involved, starting with MetroC, the initiative includes not only a consolidation intervention but a targeted restoration activity, in line with the methodological directives of the Ministry of Culture and, even before, of the great Italian tradition. Palazzo Venezia will come out stronger and even more usable, especially thanks to the renewed legibility of its decorative apparatus.”
