The Gala-Dalí Foundation intends to examine the successful Netflix series The House of Paper: the fact stems from the use by the eight thieves in the series, who storm the National Currency Factory to print 2400 million euros during eleven days of imprisonment, of a mask that in appearance and mustache resembles Salvador Dalí’s face.
The foundation had been created by the Surrealist painter himself in 1983 to promote and defend his legacy and image; currently the latter’s legal services are in the process of controlling the use of the artist’s image and regularizing Dalí’s image rights.
To this end, the foundation reminds that any person wishing to exercise or exploit any of these intangible rights derived from the work and person of Salvador Dalí must haveprior permission from the foundation. And if the foundation is aware that these rights have been violated, an attempt is made to redirect the situation, asking that unauthorized uses be regularized.
Atresmedia and Vancouver Media, producers of the House of Paper, said that the Gala-Dalí Foundation did not send them any requirements to regulate the use of the mask. Vancouver Media explained that since the series is reminiscent of the world of comic books, it was planned to have the thieves cover their faces with a mask, and two options on the character model were considered: Don Quixote and Dalí. At that point a person was assigned to create a caricature for the series, and when questioned about the need to seek permission from the foundation, Vancouver Media’s legal services said it was not necessary because it was a caricature and not the actual image.
However, during the series the surrealist painter is mentioned not a few times: what will be the future for this Dalí mask-caricature?
