It is already being described as one of the most beautiful subway stations in the world: it is the Duomo stop on Line 1 of the Naples Metro, currently under construction between the Garibaldi and Università stations, and scheduled to open in the summer of 2021, after 20 years of work (in fact, operations began in November 2001: since then, Piazza Nicola Amore, where the station will rise, at the intersection of Corso Umberto I and Via Duomo, has always been a construction site).
The station has been designed by architects Massimiliano Fuksas and Doriana Mandrelli: a glass dome supported by a corten steel skeleton will rise in Piazza Amore, from where a descent to the platforms (located 40 meters deep) will start, which Fuksas himself compared to the “walk of an astronaut” who sees the earth from the moon (light is in fact filtered so as to change color). The station will also be a kind of. museum: the work, in fact, has taken a long time because of the numerous archaeological finds that have emerged from underground in this area of downtown Naples. Among the remains have emerged a portico from the Flavian age, the Gymnasium, the temple dedicated to the Isimpian games built in 2 AD by Emperor Augustus, statues and burials. The remains have been recovered and the station will allow them to be seen, even from outside.
“The Duomo station,” said Mayor Luigi De Magistris, “I think it is absolutely one of the most beautiful stations in the world and in a few months it will finally open to the public. The station, designed by Fuksas, is on four levels and will allow visitors to admire the splendid Religious Temple found during excavations, dating back to the first century AD, built by Emperor Augustus and dedicated to the cult of the Isimpian games that were held in Naples itself, which was considered at the time the most western Greek city. The temple will be visible from the outside through a glass roof and a pathway independent of the entrance to the subway. The docks, on the other hand, are 40 meters deep and can be reached through a path made of panels that change color, recalling the colors of the day from dawn to night. Clearly, archaeological finds inevitably created impediments to the work and prompted the reshaping of the original project, requiring additional funding.Inside the station it will be possible to observe the various layers of the city’s history up to the Iron Age. As for the square, the part of the square on the lower side will also be cleared in June, and in the plans of the city administration there is its pedestrianization.”
The new subway stop will thus join other futuristic stops, such as the Toledo station designed by Catalan architect Oscar Tusquets, inaugurated in 2012 and described by the Daily Telegraph as the most beautiful subway station in the world. And also in 2021, work will be finished on the renovated Municipio station (with design by Portuguese architects Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura), those for the new Chiaia-Monte Di Dio station on Line 6 (with design by Uberto Siola and decorations by Peter Greenaway), and the new Arco Mirelli station also on Line 6 (the project is by German architect Hans Kollhoff).
Below are some renderings of what the new Duomo station will look like.
