To celebrate the centenary of the unforgettable actor’s birth, street artist Harry Greb has created a mural in Trastevere, right on Via San Cosimato, where Sordi was born, that refers to a famous scene from An American in Rome: the street art work depicts Alberto Sordi on a motorcycle in the company of Rome’s mayor Virginia Raggi. A “hypothetical motorcycle ride around the city to show that there is still so much to do,” commented the artist himself.

A postage stamp was also issued today to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sordi’s birth that depicts him in a portrait as a great performer of Italian comedy and at the top reads “Caramente Alberto Sordi” with his signature.

Also scheduled for September 16, 2020, is the opening of an exhibition celebrating the centenary at his villa overlooking the Baths of Caracalla. An event that will be produced in collaboration with the Alberto Sordi Museum Foundation and already has 18,000 bookings.

MiBACT Minister Dario Franceschini also recalled the great actor with these words, “One hundred years ago, in Via Cosimato in Trastevere, Alberto Sordi was born, one of the greatest interpreters of Italian cinema who embarked on his career by making his debut on the big screen with another great master whose centenary falls this year: Federico Fellini. His countless performances have given us a faithful mirror of the vices and virtues of Italians grappling with the physical, economic and moral rubble of the postwar period, the enthusiasm of reconstruction, emigration, the economic boom, protest and on and on until he accompanied us, with the disenchantment and lightness that were his own, into the first steps of the third millennium. That lightness, that disenchantment, that irony accompanied by a subtle bitterness that we still grasp today when watching his films are still alive in his characters, of whom each of us retains a personal and amused memory.”
