On June 11, 14, 18 and 21, 2019, the annual appointment of the passage of the sun from the Gnomon of Florence Cathedral returns.
It is a unique spectacle that has to do with science: the gnomon was designed to calculate the position of the Sun and thus be able to determine the length of the solar year. The one in Santa Maria del Fiore is the oldest and largest in the world still in operation: in fact, it has been since 1475 that visitors have had the opportunity to admire this phenomenon at this time of year.
From the 90-meter-high gnomon, the Sun’s rays will pass through the gnomonic hole to form the image of the Sun that will match the marble disk located on the floor of the Duomo.
The gnomon of Santa Maria Novella was made by mathematician Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli and was restored by Father Leonardo Ximenes in 1754.
The event is sponsored by theOpera di Santa Maria del Fiore in collaboration with the Scientific Committee for the Popularization of Astronomy, the Museum and Institute of the History of Science and the Department of Astronomy and Space Science of the University of Florence.
The phenomenon will occur from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Free admission subject to availability. Reservations are appreciated.
