After 137 years since the start of construction of the Sagrada Familia, one of Barcelona’s most visited and photographed monuments, which still remains unfinished, official authorization was obtained these days from City Hall to complete the work.
The entity in charge of the construction of the Sagrada Familia will have to pay 4.6 million to the City Hall itself for theICIO, the tax on constructions, installations and works, and for fees on the construction permit for works. The permit stipulates a maximum buildable height of 172 meters, a limit to which the famous monument designed by Antoni Gaudí and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site back in 1984 will have to be subject.
In addition, City Hall has determined the main use of the building: a visitable worship center, demarcating at 378 meters the space for commercial use, which will be accessed only from inside the basilica.
Janet Sanz, the city of Barcelona’s councillor for urban planning, said she had succeeded in achieving one of her key goals of her legislature, bringing to a close"a historical anomaly in the city."
Since 1882, the Sagrada Familia is expected to be completed in 2026 and the cost estimate is 374 million euros.
