Bergamo and Brescia will be, together, the Italian Capitals of Culture for 2023: with the approval in the Senate of the conversion into law of the Relaunch Decree, the choice of the two cities is definitively put in black and white and has become official. The title given to the two Lombard capitals is intended to promote the socio-economic and cultural revitalization of the two cities, which are among the hardest hit by the Covid-19 emergency in terms of absolute numbers (third Brescia and fourth Bergamo, after Milan and Turin), as well as among the most battered in relation to population (Bergamo and Brescia, in this ranking, are fourth and fifth behind Cremona, Lodi, and Piacenza).
The proposal, launched by the 5-Star Movement, had already been well received by the mayors of the two cities, Giorgio Gori and Emilio Del Bono, who had announced a joint candidacy before the title was established by law: so now it is done for Bergamo and Brescia, which thus see an important recognition for their territories, hit hard by the virus.
