The visit to France by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, who also paid a visit to Notre-Dame Cathedral, also served to take stock of the situation regarding the reconstruction of the building devastated by the fire last April 15. Exactly one month after the event, the French Minister of Culture, Franck Riester, has meanwhile let it be known that fundraising continues, because it is true that so far pledges of donations to the tune of close to 1 billion euros have arrived, but it is still too early to know, the minister stressed, whether the donations are sufficient for reconstruction (not least because, moreover, the opposite could also be true, namely that the amount collected so far exceeds the real needs).
To date, according to a report compiled by Congresswoman Anne Brugnera, only 38 million euros, out of the total of those promised, have actually arrived and are therefore available. And at the moment there are still no firm estimates of the amount of damage, partly because the experts’ assessments are not yet exact. Similarly, there are still no credible estimates on the timing: only the securing phase will still need a few more weeks of work. Consider that there are still works inside the church: in particular, those stored in the transept, which have not yet been accessed.
