After three years of modernization, London’s Royal Opera House , joining the Open Up project, opens to the public with new spaces dedicated to entertainment. Not only bars and restaurants, but also free performances, workshops, art workshops, family initiatives and more: the Open Up project aims to open the doors of the Royal Opera House to a wider audience and make ballet and opera accessible to all.
Architectural firm Stanton Williams developed a project aimed at expanding and renovating the spaces, making them more inclusive, but without forgetting the historic value of one of the world’s most important theaters.
As part of the project, iGuzzini provided Laser CoB downlights (with LED Chip on Board) to illuminate the showcases in which some of the stage costumes, witnesses to the theater’s history, are displayed. In the exteriors, the Royal Opera House Arcade is enhanced through the installation of Laser Blade InOut fixtures, integrated into the architecture, which illuminate individual columns at the abacus level of the capital.
The most striking part is the Floral Hall structure, renamed Paul Hamlyn Hall in 2007 as a tribute to the generosity of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Inside is now a restaurant overlooking the large central room. The convivial space is lit by Low Voltage track-mounted Palco spotlights that, thanks to their minimal size and white finish, blend into the 1858 glass and steel structure.
The Royal Opera House Open Up in London is a winner of the RIBA London Award 2019 and the RIBA National Award 2019.
