In Naples , the restoration work on the Belvedere of the Royal Palace started today: the goal, to return to the city and tourists a space from which to admire an extraordinary panorama of the Gulf of Naples with an unusual and unique perspective. The Belvedere’s torrino has always been an environment connoted by a strictly private character, reserved only for the king, and in which no Court function was planned. From next summer it will be included in the tour route of the Historical Apartment.
The Belvedere, which dominates the southern part of the building, is about 150 square meters wide at a height of about 70 meters above Acton Street. It faces toward the Bay of Naples with three large windows that open onto a balcony bordered by a railing equal to that of the balcony on Piazza del Plebiscito. Built in the neoclassical style as part of the work commissioned by Ferdinand II of Bourbon after 1837 to architect Gaetano Genovese, who over the course of 20 years renovated the entire palace, the torrino.
“A small jewel,” said director Mario Epifani, “that absolutely had to be returned to the Palace and its visitors and from which you can admire a panorama of incomparable beauty but also the Hanging Garden, with a different view, catching the design of the marbles and fountains. From next summer, access to the Belvedere will be possible directly from the museum, but also through an exclusive itinerary through the attics to let visitors discover the hidden places of the Palace. The route will be part of the hidden itineraries, such as those we already offer for the kitchens, the restoration workshop, the storerooms and the Hanging Garden.”
They will last about six months, in fact, the work that will return this part of the palace that was not part of the restoration that affected the facade of the Royal Palace in 2016.
“The project is part of a PON 20214-20 funding for the rehabilitation of roofs and attics that we have already started for over a year,” explained architect Almerinda Padricelli, director of works. “We are starting restoration work today on the interior part, and from Monday scaffolding will be erected along the southern facade to restore the exterior parts and the balcony. We also hope to safely restore access to the roof terrace that offers a view not only of the sea, but also of the entire city in 360 degrees.”
