In Naples, after the 16th-centuryIncurabili Hospital complex suffered collapse and subsidence, so much so that it had to be evacuated (which also affected an adjacent building), the Campania Region decided to intervene. In fact, at the April 24 council meeting, a budget of 80 million was programmed for the hospital’s consolidation and restoration program (which, before it was evacuated, was still in full operation).
The program, in the ASL Naples 1 report, has a total value of 100 million euros and aims to implement the interventions that will serve to ensure conditions of functionality and safety for users and preserve the cultural heritage of the hospital: the historic complex was founded in 1522 by the noblewoman Maria Lorenzo Longo, who decided to allocate her entire estate to the care of the sick, and in her task she was soon aided by other members of the Neapolitan aristocracy of the time (such as Maria d’Ayerba, co-founder, who is still buried in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, attached to the complex). Since then, the hospital’s activities have continued, and today, in addition to the hospital garrison, the complex also houses a museum of the history of medicine and a remarkable artistic heritage, starting with the Historical Pharmacy, which contains an important nucleus of ancient majolica drug jars.
On the fate of the latter, the situation is uncertain at the moment: there are those who would like to keep them inside the Incurabili, in a portion of the building not subject to the risk of collapse, while the Ministry of Cultural Heritage suggests their temporary transfer to the Museum of San Martino, where they should remain until the end of the works. Work on the complex will begin as soon as funding is available.
