Photographer Nan Goldin, one of the world’s best-known and most celebrated artists, has made it known that she has turned down a commission for the New York Times , accusing the historic newspaper of being pro-Israel. The American photographer had been commissioned by the paper to take a photograph for a cover of its Sunday insert. “Yesterday,” the artist wrote in a story on Instagram last Nov. 9, “I cancelled a large piece of work with the New York Times Sunday magazine-a shot of a musician I admire for the cover-because of the New York Times’ coverage of the war in Gaza, which shows complicity with Israel. Because of what they report and don’t report, and how they question the veracity of what the Palestinians say.”
In her story Nan Goldin tagged the Writers Against the War on Gaza (WAWOG) collective, a group of journalists, critics and others who are “committed to solidarity and a horizon of liberation for the Palestinian people”, according to a description on its website, and which accuses the New York Times editorial board and others of creating a “perversion of meaning” after the barbaric Oct. 7 Hamas attack that claimed the lives of 1.400 Israelis and continued with the terrorists’ capture of some 200 Israeli hostages. Following the attack, Israel unleashed a war on Gaza that Hamas authorities reportedly claimed 10,000 lives at the time.
“I respect the New York Times journalists who are on the ground reporting the reality,” Nan Goldin continued. “I mourn the dozens of Palestinian journalists who have been targeted and killed in recent weeks. As long as the people of Gaza are shouting, we need to shout louder so that they can hear us, no matter who tries to silence us.” Nan Goldin was also among the signatories of the controversial letter published by a group of artists a couple of weeks ago, which was harshly criticized by the Israeli art community because it contained no reference to Hamas attacks.
