Presented by MiBACT Minister Dario Franceschini, Florence Mayor Dario Nardella and City of Florence Councillor for Culture Tommaso Sacchi is the project that will lead to the creation of the new Museum of the Italian Language, which aims to be "the largest cultural complex in Europe."
The new museum venue will be created in the center of the Tuscan capital, in the Santa Maria Novella complex, and the work to upgrade the latter, for which MiBACT has invested 4.5 million euros, will get underway by 2021, on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death. The next steps for the realization of the museum include the signing of the management agreement with MiBACT, the publication of the call for final and executive design, and the awarding of the contract for the work to be completed within 500-600 days from the start of construction.
The new Museum of the Italian Language aims to make known and tell the history of the Italian language, from the Charter of Capua in 960 to the present day, through great men of letters, such as Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarch, Ariosto, Machiavelli, Leopardi, Manzoni, and D’Annunzio. It will be a museum that aims for modernity and dynamism.
“The complex that will house the museum,” Franceschini said, "is extraordinary as is the convenient location for those who reach Florence. Those who come to Florence arrive in the city of Dante, in the place of the Italian language, of the Accademia della Crusca. A high-level scientific committee is working on the project that in addition to the recovery and adaptation of the complex is focused on the need to have a museum projected into the future that allows memory but also with the use of technology to be accessible, educational, suitable for children and scholars."
Mayor of Florence Nardella said, "We are excited and enthusiastic about this project that aspires to be the most concrete and articulated project of all the celebrations for Dante’s 700th. It is right to leave marks, and the museum aims to leave its mark from next year onward. The works will start by 2021, we are rushing to start in theDante year."
Culture Councilor Sacchi added, "In the world there are 65 museums dedicated to world languages, a high number but not very high. Today in Italy the first museum of the Italian language is born at the behest of the minister in tune with the city: a historic moment, an investment of culture and life for Florence and the country."
