The Novecento Museum in Florence had proposed on the day of December 31, 2019 a real vote, complete with a voting booth, in order to elect the wish for 2020.
Each visitor had received at the entrance a ballot on which ten wishes were written, and after counting, the “wish of wishes” turned out to be"More time, more passions" with 141 votes. In second place was"More care, more respect" with 128 votes, while in third place, with 107 votes, was"Less waste, more well-being."
“With this project we hit the mark at least twice. We managed to engage the public in an operation that was serious and fun at the same time, and this on the very last day of the year. We constructed it down to the smallest details, from the voting booths, to the symbols, to the combination of the wishes themselves, which in some cases could even disorient or lead to double keys. For example, we wanted ”voters“ to stop and understand that security is also linked to the problem of excessive inequality in societies. Or that care and respect go together and involve environment, heritage, people’s rights, minority rights, but also language. That less waste goes hand in hand with more well-being. And that less violence can generate more trust and vice versa. Finally, we wanted to make people think that more politics generates at best more democracy, just as more democracy demands more political participation. It won by a few measures more time more passions. In front of more care more respect. Words carry weight. What comes out is a significant cross-section of an Italy turned as much toward the intimate - in search of fullness and true life - as toward the external world, whose responsibility of care and respect is felt,” commented Sergio Risaliti, director of the Museo Novecento and creator of the project.
Florentines and tourists participated in the vote, including many children. Other wishes listed included “More solidarity, more inclusion” (106 votes), “More work, more serenity” (97), “Less violence, more trust” (96), “More beauty, more happiness” (85), “More ideas, more creativity” (73), “Less inequality, more security” (61), “More politics, more democracy”(28).
The year’s wish will be the subject of a special project curated by the Novecento Museum.
