Montepulciano: restoration of Taddeo di Bartolo's polyptych gets underway

The restoration of the polyptych by Taddeo di Bartolo (c. 1362 - 1422), located on the high altar of the Cathedral of Montepulciano(Siena), can finally begin.
Efforts have been underway for years to restore the polyptych in order to solve the problems of degradation of the paint film (color lifting and microfalls, altered retouches from the last restoration, cracks in the wood) and the wooden support, and now that the scaffolding installation has been completed, the work can begin.
Paolo Roma will carry out the restoration of the wooden support, while Nadia Presenti and Mario Verdelli will take care of the pictorial part.
The polyptych is the largest and most monumental work of Sienese panel painting, thanks to its 20 square meters of surface area.
Robert Cope, founder of the Vaseppi Trust foundation, has provided generous and substantial funding for the work.
During the work, which is estimated to last three years, a video will be produced that will allow visitors to follow closely the main stages of the restoration and to grasp the executive details of the numerous painted figures, the stories and the almost goldsmith-like preciousness of the robes and golds of this extraordinary painted panel.
The Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio of Siena, headed by architect Anna di Bene, will have the scientific and art historical direction of the restoration in the person of the territory officer, Laura Martini.
The work in question was painted in 1401 for the high altar of the ancient Pieve di Santa Maria by Taddeo di Bartolo, a protagonist of Sienese Gothic art between the late 14th and early 15th centuries.
